Brainstorming

Since we're still having some trouble with our idea we researched various genres. We found loads of information on mystery films, thrillers, dramas, comedies, and romantic comedies. We also brainstormed possible scenarios that would fall under each genre. Researching all of this was a good idea because both my partner and I are currently leaning towards the thriller/mystery genre. It's a step in the right direction!

Here are some of our ideas and the information we found on the genres:

  • Revolves around the solution of a problem or a crime.
  • Suspense is often maintained as an important plot element using non diegetic music, camera angles, low key lighting, and surprising plot twists.
  • Mystery films: Sherlock Holmes, Vertigo, Blue velvet

Murder mystery | Long lost twin | Stalker | Unexpected crime | Revenge/ Vengeance (could be comedy/ Thriller)

  • Create heightened feelings of suspense, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.
    • The suspense in a story keeps the person hooked.
  • Usually include major plot twists, cliffhangers, and sometimes have a villain-driven plot
  • Thriller films: Inception and Black swan
Apocalypse - disease spreading - possibly hidden from public or purposely caused by gov | Supernatural | Superhero/ hero | Final Destination & Premonition similarities (Can see the future (foreshadow))

  • Light-hearted, humorous plotlines, revolving around romantic ideals.
  • There are usually obstacles in between the two lovers, but resolves, ending happily.
  • Creates and illusion of love since its over-emphasized through these films
  • Rom-Com films: Notting Hill and Sixteen Candles
Guy falls in love with girl unexpectedly (cliche) | Girl goes to dream school | Childhood sweethearts

  • Emphasis is on humor, exaggerated characteristics, happy ending
  • Comedy Films: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, White chicks, and 50 first dates

Undercover (She’s The Man, So Undercover, Killers) | Starting college or just getting out of college | Complete opposites (possibly end up together) | Guy tries to fool parents into thinking he has a formal girlfriend, but she’s  not his girlfriend | Parents keep asking about girlfriend, guy hires an escort or gets a friend.

  • Serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature.
  • Human beings at their best, their worst, and everything in-between.
  • Drama Films: Titanic, Creed, The Blue Lagoon, The Pursuit of Happyness

Poverty | Moral dilemmas | Prejudice
